Start with equipment depth, usable rail spacing, equipment weight, airflow, cable-management space and service access. Glass, perforated and solid doors have different cooling and access implications.
Outdoor racks need a separate environmental brief: rain and dust exposure, solar heating, corrosion, cooling, seals, locks and cable entries. An IP designation applies to the verified enclosure configuration; an indoor rack does not become outdoor-rated by adding a solid door.
One rack unit (1U) is 44.45 mm of usable equipment-mounting height. U height is not the overall external cabinet height. Allow separately for the base, roof, cable space and selected accessories.
The nominal 19-inch equipment mounting format is different from the outside cabinet width. A 600 mm or 800 mm wide cabinet may use a compatible internal mounting system. Confirm the equipment and rail drawings, fixing pattern, usable depth and clearances.
Required cabinet depth must include the deepest equipment, front/rear connectors, cable bend radii, rails and doors. Check delivery access, opened-door space, loaded weight, floor or wall fixing and maintenance access before ordering.
